  Refinishing DIY
To liven your bathroom or kitchen all you have to do is paint it, just one coat will make a world of difference. You can use painting not only to give a new lease of life to your old cabinets and countertops; you can use it to refinish bathtubs, bathroom tiles, and fiberglass fixtures.

Using a professional can be very expensive, so is an inexpensive do-it-yourself method, where not only will you save money but you can have the satisfaction of doing something well. Here are the tips on how to go about refinishing your bath and cabinets.

The tools you require are:

  • Spray gun with high volume and low-pressure.
  • Respirator to protect you from paint fumes.
  • Palm sander
  • Sandpaper and Masking tape paper.
The materials that you require are:
  • EP-acrylic top coat and Refinishing coatings primer
  • Chemical cleaners (Step I and Step II)
  • Fixing agent for tiles and porcelain, reducers and caulk.

Preparation
To get the best results from refinishing, it is important to prepare the surface to be refinished well. Apply the chemical cleaners on all the surfaces that have to be refinished. These chemical cleaners perform two functions:
  • They clean and remove the grease from countertops, tiles, tubs and cabinets.
  • They ready the refinishing surface for a chemical bonding agent, which will react with paint and react a touch, durable finish for tile and porcelain.
After cleaning the refinishing surfaces wash off well and dry. After this you have the sand the surface before you can paint it. Sanding roughens the surface a little that helps good bonding of the coats. For roughening the surface use the palm sander, which will help to prepare an even surface, which is ideal for painting. Then use paper and masking tape to cover the areas you do not want to paint.

While refurnishing surfaces that are tiled or made of porcelain, apply chemical bonding agent Adhesor. Apply this with paper towels or cheesecloth. Let it dry for 5 minutes then apply primer and topcoat.

Painting
The EP-Acrylic paint that is recommended is acrylic polymer coating. This double component-refinishing product gives a beautiful and durable finish that will last over the years. This can be used in kitchens, bathtubs and tiles. You can pick a color of your choice and a finish of your choice like gloss, semi-gloss or satin. A satin finish is best for countertops and cabinets and a gloss finish for tubs and tiles. Carefully follow direction for primer mixing, then pout it into the paint and fix the spray gun. Test the spray gun on a piece of scrap wood to ensure that the flow and air pressure are right. After testing the spray gun start painting from the top of the surface that you working on. Move the spray gun backwards and forwards. To have a smooth finish, ensure that each new stroke overlaps about a quarter of the previous stoke. The paint is toxic, so remember to wear rubber gloves, protective glasses at all times, while working.
